Harvest For Hunger
“We are in the business of feeding the world, which is why our annual Harvest for Hunger campaign is an important part of what we do through CHS
Country Operations. Though these rural communities are growing the crops that are feeding a hungry world, that doesn’t mean there isn’t hunger right here — the family next door, the neighbor down the street. We may not know who in our communities are going hungry, but through our Harvest for Hunger campaign, we are helping local and regional food shelves feed those people in need.”
“We might never know that the neighbor across the road or down the drive struggles to put food on the table, but through our efforts this month, we can make sure those local food shelves can anonymously help those who need it most,” says Rick Dusek, executive vice president, CHS Country Operations. “For nine years now, our CHS employees and farmer-owners have stepped up during this annual campaign to help local and regional food shelves feed those in need.”
On March 17, 2019, Southwest Grain New Salem held a Harvest for Hunger event in their community. Their goal was to help provide food and resources for their local food pantry. The employees made an Indian Taco lunch with a free will donation and collected non-perishable items. With this event, they were able to raise $1091 for the New Salem Food Pantry and give back to their community.
CHS Southwest Grain supports one of its hometown communities
Gladstone, ND (Month May 2, 2018) – CHS Southwest Grain announced today a $1562.50 local grant to the Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department. The funds will be used to support the purchase of a grain rescue tube and related equipment.
“We’re proud to support this project as a way to strengthen one of the local communities we serve and see it thrive,” says Delane Thom, General Manager, CHS Southwest Grain. “Projects like this are essential to helping our rural area and the people who live here.”
In addition to the funds contributed by CHS Southwest Grain, the contribution will be matched dollar for dollar by a CHS Seeds for Stewardship grant, which helps cooperatives grow their impact locally. Together more than $3300 will benefit the Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department.
“Cooperatives were founded on the principles of education, community involvement and cooperation,” says Delane Thom. “By combining resources, we are providing double the impact to our area and demonstrating the cooperative spirit.”
This project is the result of a conversation that happened several months ago. The Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department was looking to add more specialty equipment to their department, and the grain rescue tube came up. CHS Southwest grain said that if the department would get the proper training to use a grain rescue tube, CHS Southwest Grain would provide the equipment. The Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department had several of their members attend proper training, so CHS Southwest Grain followed through and provided the department with the equipment. “It is a very nice addition to our equipment, but we hope we never have to use it” said Fire Chief, Joe Wanner and Assistant Fire Chief, Doug Brost.
